If something is a menace to people or to a place, it's something dangerous that can hurt people or ruin things.

Climate change is a menace: it threatens our world with fires, floods, and other catastrophes.

An angry mob of people is a menace: it threatens other people and property with violence and destruction.

And if you're planning a picnic, thunderclouds are a menace: they threaten to ruin your picnic with heavy rain and dangerous lightning.

When something menaces you, it puts you in danger. And something menacing—like a menacing stare, or a menacing voice—seems scary, threatening, and likely to attack you or destroy things.

A menacing dog looks dangerous and angry, like it might attack you.

A menacing forest looks dark and spooky, like it might trap you.

As you can see, "menace" is often a very serious word for very scary things. But we can use this word more lightly. We can call someone a menace if they're just slightly annoying. And we can call something a menace if it's just a little troublesome. Take Dennis the Menace, for example! He's a cute, pesky little character who annoys his neighbor and makes a lot of messes.

Remember: a menace is something that puts people in danger, and something menacing seems scary and powerful, like it's about to hurt you.

Idea 1: "When (some bad guy from a book or a show) says (something), (his or her) voice is full of menace."

Idea 2: "If you want your (specific kind of) Halloween costume to look especially menacing, make sure you (wear or carry) (some specific thing)."
